A legend says…

   Serin was never able to call itself a true kingdom. Though it had a capital and someone reluctantly titled as king, tribes of humans and mystical beings gathered across the land under their own leaders, independent from one another.

   On an accursed day, devastation struck the mortal world. It brought a storm of poison that howled through everything in its path: seeping into the air, the ground, and all living things.

   From the north, it surged over the ocean and consumed the Island of Geal.

​​

   It continued its way eastward to Thar Nua. Elders have already sensed the danger approaching, but haven’t had enough time to lead their unorganised tribes to safety. The leaders who had the privilege to flee into Thar Nua’s magical haven clashed by its doors in an argument ignited by Lelhalean’s Lord; in the end, they lost more of their people to the catastrophe that reached them than they should have.

   As the storm travelled downwards, all human civilisations were wiped out. The naiads of Tír Ríoga fled below the enchanted waters, and their pureness protected their bodies from contamination.

   The storm’s first winds had yet to reach Laeves, but a young witch already knew something was heading towards them as he witnessed beings flee in one direction. He stood still as they ran past him and thought hard about all possible causes and the most logical moves to make.

From another direction, a man tumbled forward, breathing heavily. With panic in his eyes, he searched for anyone for help. Or if not help, to warn them. He was a high elf from Geal, the only one who was willing to warn others on the mainland about the danger that was about to come. His name was Yahui; he had little power himself, but was excellent at spotting the most talented ones in the crowd. He wasn’t sure if he misunderstood Cecil’s serious face and firm stand as proof of strength or confidence, or if it was out of desperation that he gained hope in the witch whom he had just met, but somehow the two had hope that the witch could craft a spell to protect the remaining land and its people.

Yahui headed towards the capital to warn humans and evacuate somewhere, though Cecil was fairly certain that if this storm was born from magic, hiding underground might not stop its poison.

He was now the only one at the front. Calculating instead of running, he thought about all the knowledge about chemistry, physics and magic that he had accumulated up to that point in his life ― and it was vast.

Yahui just got back to him when the storm hit. The witch had no such power to purify the tainted or such strength to shield the island, but he crafted a spell to erase the wicked storm’s existence itself. The magic wasn’t yet able to erase it from its beginning, but it ceased to exist within its current range. All life ceased to exist around him; he and Yahui, whom he managed to protect, were the only ones left there.

   This is how Eaveton’s humans who had no powers managed to survive, and this is how the Deadland came to be.

   The King, who had no power nor the will to rule, gladly bestowed the crown upon anyone who was willing to take it or could demand authority. That is how the noble and kindhearted Yahui took the crown, who had an eye for competent persons. And this is also how Prince Cecil became the “Captain,” possessing a commanding presence and combat strength, with a history to back it up. Not just that history: ever since that incident, his strength and magic have been used to get rid of catastrophes, greater or smaller.

   This Kingdom is not yet an organised one, so we must rely on His spell to keep it alive. Even if You or some others don’t agree.. I think it’s excellent. The power to end a person’s existence, to completely wipe it out. Unfortunate cases like Yours might happen, where one might… have some loved ones disappear due to… unforeseen past ties, a butterfly effect.. But ultimately, you save more lives than you lose. So it is good.

In my view, this is a sustainable system. And the key to that is how well the Captain can detach himself from all that he is doing. Detach himself from everyone, from any emotion. If he can only think in numbers, it’s sustainable. I believe the best would be if we could wipe out emotions from his body altogether. That way, we can be sure that he will not get swayed by connections when he has to make a hard choice.

Haha, do not look at me like that, Your Majesty. I’m just saying how it is, logically. Of course, it’s impossible to turn someone into a “machine” like that. That would require one strong magic to do that. Only the Great Witch would be able to pull off anything of that grandeur, if anyone. I was just musing, thinking out loud…
